Details Matter
Details Matter.
I recently asked everyone what they thought that meant and got some really good responses. We’ll begin to share those with you very soon, but of course I have a perfect example from last week to share…..stopped in at Portillos, my favorite hot dog place. Now it’s more than hot dogs, but a simple man like me gets giddy over two plain hot dogs with mustard, fries and an iced tea….perfection.
Well, I get my order, and go to sit down. Now it’s not busy, it’s about 2pm, so only 35-40 folks in there. I see a booth, the table hasn’t been wiped, but I’m usually okay with that and would sit down. As I begin to, I see that someone’s trash is still sitting in the seat, so I quickly move on and sit in the next one. As I’m enjoying my delicacy, I watch an employee with a broom, a dustpan, and a rag, he walks by the dirty booth, gives it a quick wipe down, but for some reason doesn’t feel the need to pick up the trash and throw it away. Odd kinda. So, I watch him a bit. He’s completely half-assing his cleaning duties, these tables aren’t being wiped with sanitizer, he might as well be using the broom as a cane cause he ain’t sweeping under anything, he’s just walking around faking it.

Well here comes two customers, looking for a place to sit. They head directly for the booth, almost sit down, then see the trash, and quickly move on. Watched them go to two other tables before they found an acceptable one and took it over.
So what’s the point here. It’s not just me, other people see it too. To me, Details Matter means do what you’re supposed to do, and do it very well. It means that things should be as they are supposed to be, physically, from a service standpoint, or otherwise. It doesn’t’ matter if it’s a big job or just picking up a little trash. There’s an old phrase that says your goal in business should be to always exceed expectations. Heck, it’s hard enough to just meet most people’s expectations most of the time. From a customer perspective, you expect things to be as good or better than you expect them to be. When they aren’t, it’s at least an inconvenience but more often a disappointment. Just wipe it down and pick up the damn trash, it’s that simple! Disappointed people aren’t usually excited, and they certainly don’t have fun and leave happy.
Whatever Details Matter means to you, in the least it means things are clean, tidy, well presented and in the immortal words of Scott Jacques it means “that you give a shit and take pride in what you do”. Evidently not the guy at Portillos…..
Go make sure people Have Fun and Leave Happy. Every Day.
